पितृ is a key class of beings within the सनातन धर्म tradition. While देवता may be seen as “enablers or facilitators of अनुभव”, पितृ may be seen as “caretakers” of all beings. The मार्कण्डेय पुराण contains स्तोत्र referred to as the पितृ स्तोत्र – the same स्तोत्र also comes within the गरुड महापुराण too and chanting this स्तोत्र is stated as being beneficial for those who chant with श्रद्धा and भक्ति.
Some points may be useful to state here:
- The benefit of studying any स्तुति is that one gains some form of ज्ञान about the being whose स्तुति is being undertaken within the स्तुति.
- The फल श्रुति contained towards the end clearly conveys the benefits to the person who is reciting this स्तुति.
- Just as there are thirty-three classes of देवता, there are thirty-one classes of पितृ. And while यज्ञ is performed for the देवता, श्राद्ध is performed for the पितृ. And while the मंत्र for the देवता end with स्वाहा offered at a यज्ञ, the मंत्र for पितृ end with स्वधा offered at a श्राद्ध.
- पितृ operate under the direction of यम देवता and ensure that all जीव live out their lives as aligned to their respective कर्म.
- While पितृ is therefore understood commonly as ancestors alone, one must note here that पितृ does not refer to one’s ancestors alone but the entire व्यवस्था established to ensure that all lives are led as per one’s कर्म.
- Question may therefore arise here as to why must one undertake स्तुति of any देवता or पितृ? While various reasons may be given, any स्तुति may simply be understood as an expression of gratitude alone. We acknowledge their role in our lives and thank their presence that is facilitating an opportunity to live life pursing कर्म imbued with धर्म and gain their blessings as we work towards मोक्ष.
This blog is being put together for those who have श्रद्धा in the पितृ व्यवस्था and may therefore be interested in chanting this स्तुति. Of course, consulting a learned गुरु and referring to these स्तुति in original पुराण texts is also recommenced to all those interested.

The महत्, महात्मान्, महित, महिमावत् & महाबल – these five too are classes of पितृ, being destroyers of पाप. सुखद, धनद, धर्मद & भूतिद – such also are called as four classes of पितृ. There are thus thirty-one classes of पितृ who pervade the entire जगत्. Being satisfied with me, may they be satisfied and ever grant me what is beneficial.

Being thus praised by him, O best of मुनिs, those पितृ issued forth with their splendor, illuminating the 10 regions of the sky; and he beheld them standing in front of them, adorned with the पुष्प, गंध & अनुलेपनम् (paste, oil, etc that is used during पूजा) which he had presented to them. Offering कृताञ्जलि to them again and again with श्रद्धा as well as with joining of hands, full of respect, he exclaimed separately to each of them – “नमस्ते to you! नमस्ते to you!” Well pleased, the पितृ thereupon said to him, the best of मुनि – “Choose you a boon”. To them, he spoke, bending down his neck respectfully.
(Next two relate the रुचि मुनि seeking a boon and पितृ then granting that wish – these are not relevant from a स्तुति lens)

And who shall recite the स्तुति done by you, which gives us pleasure, with भक्ति at a श्राद्ध, standing all the while in front of the ब्राह्मण while they are eating, that श्राद्ध shall no doubt become ours imperishably, because of our pleasure in hearing the स्तुति, when the person chants this with भक्ति.

Although श्राद्ध be performed without ब्राह्मण learned in the वेद, although it may be vitiated by means of wealth which has been gained unjustly or although it be performed in any other defective manner or although moreover it be performed with blemished offerings unfit for a श्राद्ध or be performed also at a wrong time or in a wrong place or yet to be accompanied by the proper ordinances, or if it is performed by men without श्रद्धा or in reliance on cheating, nevertheless, such a श्राद्ध shall be to our joy because this स्तुति is uttered there.

Wherever this स्तुति, which brings us happiness is recited at a श्राद्ध, there तृप्ति (or satisfaction, joy) accrues to us lasting for twelve years. This स्तुति recited in हेमन्त yields तृप्ति for twelve years; and this beautiful स्तुति recited in शिशिर yields तृप्ति for twice that number of years; when recited at the श्राद्ध in वसन्त tends to give us तृप्ति for sixteen years and this स्तुति recited in ग्रीष्म causes तृप्ति for sixteen years indeed.

When a श्राद्ध although performed imperfectly is concluded with this स्तुति in the वर्षा काल, imperishable तृप्ति accrues to us, O रुचि. When recited at the श्राद्ध even in the शरत् काल, it grants तृप्ति which lasts for fifteen years.

And in whichever house, this स्तुति remains constantly in written form, there we shall be present when a श्राद्ध is performed. Therefore, standing at a श्राद्ध in front of the ब्राह्मण who are eating during the event, O great मुनि!, you must hear this स्तुति which supplies पुष्टि ( nourishment) to us.
