Simplified overview of Yogasutra using lens of Sanatana Dharma

People interested in deeper ideas about योग are often asked to refer to पतंजलि योगसूत्र. And there are various books written by Swamijs like Swami Vivekananda or Swami Krishnananda and there are books written by academicians like Edwin Bryant. And of course, there are videos on Youtube where one comes across videos by various kinds of people on the text. One however encounters the following problem with all these options available:

  1. There are 195 सूत्र in the शास्त्र but people often find it difficult to sustain their interest in a सूत्र by सूत्र narration as these tend to be either very long or because people dive into complex ideas without any preparation and thus struggle to copy up with these ideas.
  2. All ancient हिन्दू शास्त्र have their own technical words like धर्म, देवता, कर्म, प्रकृति, etc. Most of the people have no initiation into the complex ecosystem of each of these words. Worse, modern Hindus are exposed to what I refer to as “tyranny of translation” where these words are translated into English equivalents, e.g., गुण is translated as qualities or attributes and this messes up the understanding one may gain from these texts.
  3. Then there is a problem of history – many books spend a lot of time about historicity of पतंजलि – when was be born, was he before Buddha or after Buddha, etc. For one who is purely interested in ज्ञान being conveyed by पतंजलि, these diversions are a huge obstacle.
  4. Lastly, we often see writers, albeit with good intentions, bringing to old philosophical debates between various ancient सनातन धर्म schools of thought while discussing any शास्त्र. And the affinity of the writer or Swamiji himself or herself to a certain brand of school, say अद्वैत, brings those lens into reading the शास्त्र.

All the above (and more) invariably end up distracting one who is merely keen to understand the text and know what does it mean to be a normal साधक. There is a lot in common between various schools of सनातन धर्म. This commonality in fact unites धर्म into a cohesive whole and the differences, if any, are more relevant for a very serious practitioner at a higher level of attainment. For beginners, the need is to primarily get an overview of the core idea in the शास्त्र. Once a basic overview is obtained, without the type of distractions given above, then the person who has obtained this overview can dive into commentaries by greats like आदि शंकराचार्य or व्यास or others directly without being confused by the distraction that many modern commentaries end up creating.

An attempt has been to provide this overview for a beginner साधक who would like to know the text from the lens of सनातन धर्म. Given below are links to a no-frills, no music video uploaded on Youtube. Of course, given that this is my first attempt, my own raw immaturity both in speaking quality and video blandness may become evident 😂. I am however hoping that those who have the patience to watch these videos fully will connect with the approach conveyed within these slides and benefit from these.
