विराट पर्व is primarily devoted to the sons of पाण्डू under employment. And as they embark on their employment, युधिष्ठिर does a स्तुति of श्री दुर्गा. What is presented below is the स्तुति along with a literal translation of each of the श्लोक for interest of the readers. Practicing Hindus may chant these श्लोक before beginning of any new venture and thereby benefit from obtaining कृपा of Her before the starting of any such venture. Note that only a literal translation has been given and no effort is made here to expand on the deeper meanings of the words given here.
यशोदा गर्भ संभूतां नारायण वर प्रियां | नन्द गोप कुले जातां मङ्गल्यां कुल वर्धिनीं ||
One who was born from यशोदा, one who is very dear to नारायण, one who was born in the family of नन्द गोप and one who brings मङ्गल to all and strengthens the family
2. कंस विद्रावणकरीं असुराणां क्षयंकरीं | शिलातटविनिक्षिप्तां आकाशं प्रतिगामिनीं ||
One who was able to scare कंस, one who defeats असुर, one who flew away towards the sky when कंस tried to smash Her on a stone
3. वासुदेवस्य भगिनीं दिव्य माल्य विभूषितां | दिव्याम्बर धरां देवीं खड्ग खेटक धारिणीं ||
One who is the sister of वासुदेव, one who is decorated with divine garland, divine ornaments and divine clothes, one who holds a sword with cover in Her hands
4. भारावतरणे पुण्ये ये स्मरन्ति सदाशिवाम् | तान् वै तारयसे पापात् पङ्के गामिव दुर्बलां ||
Whosoever remembers You, You take an auspicious form to rescue those just as a person who rescues a cow who has lost all energy getting struck in mud
5. नमोस्तु वरदे कृष्णे कुमारी ब्रह्मचारिणि | बालार्कसदृशाकारे पूर्णचन्द्र निभानने ||
We bow down to देवी who showers us with Her blessings, You are a कुमारी and a ब्रह्मचारिणी, You have a form as bright as newly risen Sun and face as beautiful as a full moon
6. चतुर्भुजे चतुर्वक्त्रे पीनश्रोणिपयोधरे | मयूर पिञ्छवलये केयूराङ्गदधारिणी | भासि देवी यथा पद्मा नारायणपरिग्रह: ||
You have four hands, four faces, you have large hips as a high bosom, Your hands have peacock coloured bangles and jewelled amulets on Your arms and Your beauty as bright as that of पद्मा, the wife of नारायण
7. स्वरूपम् ब्रह्मचर्यं च विशदं गगनेश्वरी | कृष्णच्छविसमा कृष्णा संकर्षण समानना ||
O देवी who always hover in space! Your स्वरूप and ब्रह्मचर्य are without a blemish and Your aura is as cooling as that of श्रीकृष्ण
8-9. विभ्रती विपुलौ बाहू शक्रध्वज समुच्छ्रयौ | पात्री च पङ्कजी घण्टी स्त्रीविशुद्धा च या भुवि || पाशं धनुर्महाचक्रं विविधान्यायुधानि च | कुण्डलाभ्यांम् सुपूर्णाभ्यांम कर्णाभ्यां च विभूषिता ||
You have raised your beautiful hands (one giving boons while other granting fearlessness) as the flag of इंद्र. In your third hand is present a vessel, in the fourth a lotus, fifth a bell, in the sixth a noose, the seventh an arrow and चक्र in the eight hand. You are in possession of innumerable weapons. Your beauty is enhanced with ear-rings on both Your ears.
10-11. चन्द्र विस्पर्ध्दिना देवी मुखेन त्वम् विराजसे | मुकुटेन विचित्रेण केश बन्धेन शोभिना || भुजङ्गा भोगवासेन श्रोणी सुत्रेण राजता | विभ्राजसे चाबद्धेन भोगेनेवेह मन्दार: ||
The aura on Your face is as beautiful as that of full-moon. You have a beautiful crown on top of your head and your graceful tresses with dresses made of the hood of snakes and the beautiful ornament covering your abdomen which make you appear like मन्दार पर्वत girded by serpents
12. ध्वजेन शिखि पिच्छानामुच्छ्रितेन विराजसे | कौमारं व्रतमास्थाय त्रिदिवं पावितं त्वया ||
Your peacock feather styled flag is flying high in the sky which has enhanced Your own beauty. Having taken a व्रत of ब्रह्मचर्य, You have sanctified all the three worlds.
13. तेन त्वम् स्तूयसे देवी त्रिदशै: पूज्यसे अपि च | त्रैलोक्य रक्षणार्थाय महिषासुर नाशिनि | प्रसन्ना मे सुरस्रेष्ठे दयां कुरु शिवा भव ||
O देवी! This is the reason why all देवता do your स्तुति and offer पूजा to You too. O One who had saved all three लोक by destroying महिषासुर! Please be happy with me and have compassion on me. Kindly make me auspicious.
14 जया त्वम् विजया चैव संग्रामे च जयप्रदा | ममापि विजयं देहि वरदा त्वम् च सांप्रतम् ||
You are जया & विजया. In any contest, You are the one who grant विजय in any battle. Kindly therefore grant me विजय also. At this time, kindly become a boon-giving benefactor to me.
15. विन्ध्ये चैव नागरश्रेष्ठे तव स्थानं हि शाश्वतम् | कालि कालि महाकालि खड्ग खट्वाङ्ग धारिणी ||
Your eternal living place is विन्ध्याचल who is the best among all mountains. O कलि कलि महा कलि!!! You are the bearer of खड्ग and खट्वाङ्ग.
16. कृतानुयत्रा भूतैस्त्म् वरदा कामचारिणी | भारावतारे ये च त्वाम् संस्मरिष्यन्ति मानवा: ||
17. प्रणमन्ति च ये त्वाम् हि प्रभाते तु नरा भुवि | न तेषां दुर्लभं किञ्चित् पुत्रतो धनतो अपि वा ||
To all beings you follow Your way, you grant boons aligned to their wishes. O One who lives as per Your own wish! Those who remember You when they are going through difficult times and those who remember You daily, they will never have lack of progeny and wealth.
18. दुर्गात् तारयसे दुर्गे तत् त्वम् दुर्गा स्मृर्ता जनै: | कान्तारेश्व वसन्नानां मग्नानां च महार्णवे ||
19. दस्युभिर्वा निरुद्धानां त्वम् गति: परमा नृणां | जल प्रतरणे चैव कान्तारेश्वटवीषु च ||
20. ये स्मरन्ति महादेवी न च सीदन्ति ते नरा: | त्वम् कीर्ति: श्रीर्धृति: सिद्धिर्ह्वीर्विद्या संततिर्मति: ||
21-22. संध्या रात्रि: प्रभा निद्रा ज्योत्स्ना कांति: क्षमा दया | नृणां च बन्धनं मोहं पुत्रनाशं धनक्षयं ||
व्याधिं मृत्युं भयं चैव पूजिता नाशयिष्यसि | सोSहं राज्यत् परिभ्रष्ट: शरणं त्वाम् प्रपन्नवान् ||
O दुर्गा ! As you rescue people from danger, you are called as दुर्गा by all. You are the greatest refuge of people who are groping in the wilderness, getting drowned in the great ocean and are taken captives by high-way men. O महादेवी ! the persons who remember You while navigating the waters (of sadness), in the forest or in wilderness are never afflicted with calamity. You are कीर्ति, श्री, धृति, सिद्धि, लज्जा, विद्या, सन्तति (offspring), मति (intellect), सन्ध्या, रात्रि, प्रभा, निद्रा ज्योत्स्ना, कान्ति, क्षमा and दया. When पूजा is offered to You, You remove one’s attachments, infactuations, indication of loss of progeny or wealth, disease, death and all fears. I too am deprived of my kingdom and am therefore seeking your शरण.
23. प्रणतश्च यथा मूर्ध्ना तव देवी सुरेश्वरि | त्राहि मां पद्मपत्राक्षि सत्ये सत्या भवस्व न: ||
O सुरेश्वरि! I bow to you by touching my forehead to Your feet. O देवी with wide eyes like a Lotus petal! Please protect me. Be सत्य to us who are seeking सत्य.
24. शरणं भव मे दुर्गे शरण्ये भक्तवत्सले | एवं स्तुता हि सा देवी दर्शयामास पाण्डवम्। उपगम्य तु राजानम् इदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।
O Devi who are the protector those who seek Your शरण! Please protect us. Being thus implored by स्तुति, देवी gave दर्शन of Herself to युधिष्ठिर and coming next to him spoke the following words
देव्युवाच :-
श्रृणु राजन् महाबाहो मदीयं वचनं प्रभो। भविष्यत्यचिरादेव संग्रामे विजयस्तव।।
Listen O महाबाहो राजन्! Listen to My words; you will attain विजय in the battle in the future
मम प्रसादान्निर्जित्य हत्वा कौरवाहिनीम्। राज्यं निष्कण्टकं कृत्वा भोक्ष्यसे मेदिनीं पुन:।।
Having defeated and killed the Kaurava forces as प्रसाद given by Me, you shall enjoy Earth again after the thorns in your kingdom are removed.
भ्रातृभि: सहितो राजन् प्रीतिं प्राप्स्यसि पुष्कलाम्। मत्प्रसादाच्च ते सौख्यम् आरोग्यं च भविष्यति।।
O राजन्! You shall with your brothers again enjoy an adundance through My प्रीति, even good health and happiness..
ये च संकीर्तयिष्यन्ति लोके विगतकल्मषा: | तेषां तुष्टा प्रदास्यामि राज्यमायुर्वपु: सुतम् ||
Those who do My कीर्तन, there will be freed of any impurity (meaning पाप) and I confer on them kingdom, long life, body without disease and progeny.
प्रवासे नगरे चापि संग्रामे शत्रुसंकटे | अटव्यां दुर्गकान्तारे सागरे गहने गिरौ || ये स्मरिष्यन्ति मां राजन् यथाहं भवथा स्मृता | न तेषां दुर्बलं किञ्चिद अस्मिस्मल्लोके भविष्याति ||
To persons who will remember Me, as you have done, in exile, in the town, in a battle, in danger from enemies, in a forest, in unapproachable deserts, in seas or mountains, there will be nothing unattainable in this world.
इदं स्तोत्रवरं भक्त्या श्रृणुयाद् वा पठेत वा | तस्य सर्वाणि कार्याणि सिद्धिं यास्यन्ति पाण्डवा: ||
O sons of पाण्डू! Those who will listen to, or recite with श्रद्धा his excellent स्तोत्र, shall attain सिद्धि in all their actions.
मतप्रसदाच्च वः सर्वान् विराटनगरे स्थितान् | न प्रज्ञास्यन्ति कुरवो नरा वा तन्निवासिनः ॥
Through my कृपा, neither the Kurus nor people inhabiting the city of विराट will be able to recognize you while you stay in that city.
इत्युक्त्वा वरदा देवी युधिष्ठिरमरिन्दमं | रक्षां कृत्वा च पाण्डूनां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ||
Having said this to युधिष्ठिर, one who is a repressor of enemies, She took upon Herself the burden of protecting the sons of पाण्डू and disappeared.
