Concluding reflections on the story of Nala & Damayanti

Whosoever talks about कर्कोटक नाग, दमयन्ती, नल and राजर्षि ऋतुपर्ण will destroy the दोष of कलियुग

The presence of this one श्लोक itself suggests the importance of this entire इतिहास of नल and दमयन्ती especially given that we are living in the कलियुग and deeply influenced by the actions of कलि operating within us on a continual basis. Sri Shanmukha Saamadeva Sharma Garu, in one of his talks, actually recommends that this one श्लोक be chanted daily to mitigate the impact of कलि.

As soon as one reads this इतिहास, some immediate connections with Ramayana become quite easy to detect –

  1. Both राम & सीता had to spend many years in the forest; so do नल & दमयन्ती
  2. Both राम and सीता are always thinking about each other; नल and दमयन्ती too throughout their lives are always thinking about each other.
  3. The anxieties and worries that दमयन्ती experienced while attempting to locate नल seem very similar to the anxieties and worries experienced by हनुमान् while attempting to locate सीता (as conveyed in the सुन्दरकाण्ड)
  4. Just as राम asked about the whereabouts of सीता to the trees and animals at Panchavati, दमयन्ती too engaged in conversations with mountains, animals, etc., asking about the whereabouts of नल
  5. Just as राम lost his kingdom unexpectedly as an act of chance, so too, even नल lost his kingdom as a random act of chance.

It is no wonder that when सीता recounts a list of famous couples to take inspiration from them, नल & दमयन्ती happen to be one such couple (as conveyed in the सुन्दरकाण्ड)

But coming back to the इतिहास, looking at a superficial level, this seems like an ordinary story. It looks like a story of a couple in love, who lived a good life for a couple of years, faced separation owing to a chance event, suffered for three years but never forgot about their love for each other and finally, after experiencing many a difficult moments, they came back to each other and all’s well that ends well :). The devotion of दमयन्ती towards her husband is exemplary and so is the love of नल towards his wife. Beyond this, one also does not find any deep philosophy, no mention of त्रिमूर्ति, no mention of words like आत्मा and परमात्मा, no विधान of various पूजाs are articulated and no morals are stressed upon in details (just the virtues are mentioned as adhered to by the characters).

If this is so, why should this story be so important that it is mentioned in the महाभारत and also comes up in various पुराण? Some give aways can be moments of magic – like swans talking, dice turning into birds and snatching clothes, Ashrama manifesting and then disappearing, snake biting the king, etc. My reading, as a lay साधक is shared below. I am sure those well-versed in योग and साधना will be able to share much more deeper meanings.  Note that the points below are not being shared to convey a certain order but random reflections on the parts of the story that stayed on.

  1. The very first “magic” is that of swans speaking to नल and दमयन्ती. Swan is symbolized as knowledge and is represented as the वाहन of देवी सरस्वती. A हंस is capable of separating water and milk – this is the description one finds in the शास्त्र and thus, presence of a हंस represents presence of बुद्धि or more particularly, विवेक (the power of discrimination). One may therefore infer that both नल and दमयन्ती came to like each other based on knowledge of the appearance and character of each other. This marriage is thus a marriage via knowledge of each other’s attributes and not a mere physical attraction.
  2. दमयन्ती chooses नल over the देवताs. But before this, the देवताs show interest in marrying दमयन्ती. How are we to understand this? In the वैदिक विवाह परम्परा, the वधू is first consecrated with the देवताs before she is married off to वर – could the presence of the the देवताs indicate this idea? But maybe there is a deeper idea.
  3. दमयन्ती represents the आत्मा and the fundamental power of आत्मा is स्वेच्छा or स्वातंत्र्य. For this reason, दमयन्ती engages in the स्वयंवर and it is She who decides whom to marry to. As per the शैव tradition too, it is देवी referred to as विमर्श शक्ति is the “I” aspect of शिव who takes on a रूप to experience Itself. And here, दमयन्ती selects नल, who is the जीव. And आत्मा and जीव are intricately connected to each other – they are always inseparable without each other.
  4. Note also the view of the पुराणs that birth as a मनुष्य is essential to attain मोक्ष – the life as a देवता is temporary and only for भोग only and not conducive for ज्ञान or तपस्या for which one needs to be born as a जीव only. And this is probably why दमयन्ती rejects the देवताs but selects a जीव. Equally however, one must know that one cannot live or function without the help of the देवताs – hence both दमयन्ती and नल take the permission of the देवताs for living with each other.
  5. In रामायण too, राम and सीता used to live very happily with each other as long as they are together. नल and दमयन्ती too were very happy with each other. But the moment separation happened, both sides suffered intensely. आत्मा and जीव too thus share a deep bond but the moment this connect breaks, both suffer. In रामायण, सीता’s attention lapsed and she got attracted to a non-existing golden deer and here, नल too got carried away by being attracted to an unreal domain viz gambling. And both feel as soon as their attention got distracted. In रामायण, राम tried to convince सीता not to fall for the attraction and she ignored; in here, दमयन्ती tried to show reason to नल but he too ignored – only to suffer later.
  6. And who is the one who creates distractions? It is the माया or कलि in this इतिहास. माया or कलि operate from within only – the enemy is not outside but the lapse in our दृष्टि or our vision internally which distracts us. It keeps looking for situations where one strays from the disciplines and rules of the शास्त्रs – and in नल, कलि entered his body when he made a small lapse in his नित्यकर्म. A minor lapse is enough to descend to the lowest depths – a very scary message that is conveyed here. And especially when we are living in कलियुग where most of us live lives fully unfamiliar with the शास्त्रs, will any form of vigilance be adequate to save us from the whims and sufferings that कलि takes us to?
  7. Once away in forest, they lose everything – wealth, family and worse, even clothes. नल is naked, literally meaning that when जीव breaks away from आत्मा, जीव has nothing for protection and this was the lowest point for नल as one cannot get into a situation worse than losing even one’s own clothes.
  8. And what does one do when one is at the lowest? तपस्या – there may be no other way out.  And this is where one comes across नल making entry into fire and seeing a snake in कुण्डल आकार which may be seen as nothing else but कुण्डलिनी lying dormant at the base of the spine for all beings. And with तपस्या, the कुण्डलिनी starts rising up and almost immediately, नल gets a solution to his naked state of being – he moves to अयोध्या and gets appointed as a charioteer and obviously works his way out of the problem.
  9. Condition of दमयन्ती is presented in a far more dramatic manner. She moves jungle to jungle, cries continually and asks everyone about the whereabouts of the husband. The choice of the objects with whom she engages is also interesting – first is mountain (which may be seen as an expression of तमस्), then a lion (which may be seen as an expression of रजस्) and then अशोक tree (which may be seen as an expression of सत्व). Her efforts remain the same and she continuously introduces Herself as the wife of नल, daughter of भीम and daughter-in-law of वीरसेन – and all these efforts do not yield anything. Why so?
  10. Note that आत्मा is निर्गुण and taking on to any गुण will not yield a solution since by Its very nature, it is beyond गुण. However, when she takes on to सत्वगुण, She gets a partial solution – since She at least gets a place to stay. But what happens here is very interesting – when asked about Her identity, She does not introduce Herself as She had done earlier but merely states that She is a सैरन्ध्री – and the moment She lets go of Her ego, Her real identity gets revealed and She returns to Her parents’ house. This difference become starkly visible in this story.
  11. One may now argue – all this is fine. But why did नल not come back to दमयन्ती’s home immediately? Eventually, that is what he did and if he was really keen in locating दमयन्ती and keen on being with Her, he could have immediately gone to Her house and would have found Her. After all, even when they were leaving for the forest, दमयन्ती asks नल that they can go over to her paternal home but he refused. Why so?
  12. And this is a great lesson on धर्म. When one is down, when one knows that one has strayed from the path of धर्म, तपस्या is necessary – प्रायश्चित्त is necessary. One has to pass through the ordeal of fire. नल went through fire and सीता too went through fire. And once they passed through the ordeal, both attained योग्यता. Without योग्यता, one may get physical protection but one may not learn the lesson of straying from the path of धर्म. This is why even अहल्या had to pass through the ordeal of तपस्या and only after this, She attained योग्यता to return with Her husband, गौतम.
  13.  There is another aspect that is very interesting – नल is associated with अश्वविद्या while ऋतुपर्ण is associated with द्यूतविद्या and गणना शक्ति. Does these too signify something?  अश्व is associated with प्राणशक्ति and अश्व is also an animal associated with सत्वगुण. Thus, association of नल with अश्व may be seen as association of सत्वगुण meaning that no matter how difficult a situation a साधक experiences, a साधक must stick to सत्व rather than getting carried away by रजस् and तमस्. And maybe on account of his continual association with सत्व, दमयन्ती’s love for नल remains – it never goes away because जीव is seen as closest to आत्मा only when जीव takes on a सत्व orientation in life. अश्वविद्या may also be seen as प्राण विद्या – and the one who masters पञ्चप्राण always lives a healthy life.
  14. But what about द्यूतविद्या and गणना शक्ति? We have stated that entry of कलि into नल made him suffer. And when माया enters one’s life, all events will seem random, and we are fully caught into it. But nothing is random – कर्म is precise and when one understands the work of माया, when one realizes that randomness is not at play, when one learns the knowledge of numbers (गणना शक्ति) and probability (द्यूतविद्या), one becomes free. And this is why the moment नल learns both these streams of ज्ञान, कलि left his body. This probably requires a much more detailed explanation but my own depth being limited, I will have to pause here on this aspect.
  15. Finally the reunion – coming together of आत्मा and जीव is a cause for celebration since the joy of life is the highest when both are together. In fact, आत्मा never really leaves the जीव but it is माया that gives this perception that both are separated. But once माया departs, both come together and experience the bliss of live.

All events, magic, sufferings, etc fall in place when the deeper दृष्टि is taken on as we pass through the story. And in कलियुग in particular, the value that this story brings is much more important. And with this backdrop, one will navigate the complexities of life with a far greater awareness, caution and balance and thereby live in satisfactory life.
